On Thursday we went to Christchurch to go on the gondola. The gondola went up the hill pretty fast. We got up to the top of the hill and looked at all the snow capped mountains. We went into the café to have some food. Then we left the gondola and drove to Lake Tekapo. Then yesterday we went to Mt Cook to have a look at the glaciers in the glacier lake. That lake was built naturally in the last ice age where a lot of ice came rushing down the mountain and pushed all the rocks on the ground that made a wall. Then when the ice melted a lake was made. Over time the glaciers then were rubbing the rocks together and made a fine coat of powder that made the water look milky. The water was 2 degrees. It takes 300 years for the snow and ice at the top of the glacier to reach the lake below. Large icebergs break off from the glacier and float in the lake. They take about two years to melt. One of the ice bergs was 80 metres long and only 10% of the ice berg appears above the surface of the water. Then we went back to the cabin where we stayed for the next two nights. Both nights we went to the thermal pools and swam in hot water under the stars.
Today we drove to Christchurch and arrived at our hotel room. After we arrived dad and I drove around looking for a car wash that you can do by hand but they didn’t have any so we had to use the automatic car wash. From the inside of the car looking at how the car wash works was really awesome. Then we came back to the hotel and went to the spa and pool. After the swim we went to dinner and I had pork fettuccini. Then after dinner we came back and packed for the flight on Sunday. We have to get up at 3.00 in the morning to catch the 6.00 flight home.

Today we travelled 1 1/2 hours to Akaroa to go swimming with the dolphins. But when we got there the boat wasn’t going because the water was too rough. So while the water was settling mum, Sam, dad and I walked down the main street where there were a lot of cafes .We had a break at one of them and I had a “Lift plus” and Sam had a coffee choc hit. Then we went further up the main street to where the shops are and looked at all the tribal necklaces. We went back to the dolphin place to see if the boats were going and they were, so we got all suited up in wetsuits and left in the small boat. Mum, Sam and I got into the water where the dolphins were surrounding the boat and as soon as we got into the water the dolphins started to surround us. The dolphins came really close about 50cm away from you. Then we got in the boat and went to a little quiet spot where the driver told us that the male fur seals were making their territory so they can mate. Then we went back to shore to have a hot shower and get changed.

Today we woke up at 7:30am to pack up and go to the world’s longest and fastest flying fox. That was great because the highest speed we got to was 94.4 kmh. It is 1.6 km long. We got to have two turns because there was noone else there. We then had to go back to Nelson to the WOW Wearable Art Museum which is all about dresses and cars. Then we left the museum to go to Christchurch. That was a 5 hour trip. Half way there we stopped at Kaikoura where we saw some seals. They were all lying on the beach and rocks which was just next to the road. We stopped to have a closer look and one of the seals chased Sam around the car, barking and snapping at him like a dog.

Today we had to book out of the cabin at 10:00, but before we left Sam, mum and I jumped on the jumping pillow. The pillow was about 5 metres high and 20 metres long. We left our cabin and went to Wellington to go to the Maori museum and to go to the South Island. When we got onto the boat we drove the car on while the trucks came on at the level above us. But we were on the level where the trains come on. Unfortunately there were no trains on our boat. We walked up to the top and sat down next to the window. Mum and I then walked outside to watch and feel the boat move off the dock. It took 3 hours 15 minutes to get to the South Island. The water was hitting the boat and making it hard to walk on the boat. We docked at Picton and then drove to Nelson which was a 2 hour drive through the windy roads.

Today we went to the trout farm where the trout are about 50cm long. When you threw a little rock into the pond where the little trout were, they would all think it was food so they all fought over it and it looked so cool. Then we went to Mt Ruapehu and the top of the mountain was covered with snow. Mum and dad went to reception to ask if the chairlift was working and it wasn’t and she said it works on the other side of the mountain. When we got over the other side people were skiing and I asked if we could ski but it was too late and mum said if she had known she would have planned a day of skiing. But just going up on the chair lift was really good because we were 2300 metres above sea level and higher than the clouds. The top of the mountain is nearly 2800 metres above sea level. Then on the way to our next cabin we stopped at Gravity Canyon and went down in a chair 80 metres off the edge of the bridge and stopped just above the river. It was fun.

Yesterday we were going to the rapids jet where you go down stream through the rapids. But we couldn’t go on that one because you needed 4 adults and there were only 2 so we couldn’t go on that one. Then mum said maybe the Huka Falls jet ride will be good so mum booked us in for 2:30 so it all worked out in the end. The boat ride was really good because the boat was like yesterday’s but not as fast to take off but still really fast. You would speed down stream then do a 360 then head up stream. When the driver does a 360 everyone gets thrashed around and wet. Then when the ride finished we rushed to the car and drove to the Taupo quad bikes. The ride was heaps good because you are on a track going up the mountains and down through rough terrain and hooning on the straits. Sam and I did that for an hour. It was lots of fun.

Today we left our hotel that Mum won in the competition and left to go to Rotorua. On the way we stopped at the Agrodome to have a ride on the agrojet and freefall extreme. We did the freefall extreme first. That was awesome because you put on a jumpsuit and go outside, then you crawl onto a net above a giant fan and float in the air. The people who run the ride throw you around for 5 minutes. That was really fun but then we moved to the agrojet where you are in a jet boat where the driver went around corners really quickly. If you are on the side your neck gets thrashed around. Then we left the agrodome and travelled down the road to Skyline where you go up to the top in a gondola and then you can go on some luge rides that go really fast down the hill. I went on the advanced course and I went around the corner and went on 2 wheels and then could not turn and went straight into the sand bunker and almost went on the edge of the hill. Then we left to go to the thermal area called Hells Gate. This place had the most discusting smell and you could swim in mud that is heated by the molten rock under the ground like at the beach but because the gas bubbles at the beach were so small they did not smell. But at Hells Gate it had massive gas bubbles so they smelt really bad. We also got to go in a thermal spa and it smelt bad too.

It’s ok we have been enjoying ourselves. But I’m sure we can’t all wait until you’re back. Oh and in reading groups, we have moved onto a new book called…Oh no, I can’t remember, but it is a good little book. It has a lot of different versions of nursery rhymes – written from a different perspective than the usual main character. I am also still waiting for Mrs Stenning to give me my feedback for last time we have read. I wanted to see if she would remember, obviously she hasn’t, oh well, she will know now!

By the time you read this Jack, you will have returned to enjoy the sun and warm temperatures here. You sounded as if you really enjoyed your trip. I have been to Hot Water Beach; we dug holes in the sand and let the hot water seep into the pool and then we sat in it. We made sure however, that the water was only tepid! I haven’t been to Cathedral Cove – sounds amazing. Even though I have been to Waitomo, there would be no way that I would have gone down through darkened caves. Scary!
By: Mrs K on October 30, 2009
at 6:17 am
Today we left to go to the Hot Water Beach where there is some molten rock under the sand. When you dig a hole in the right spot the water is hot. The temperature of the molten rock is 170 degrees and the water temperature can reach 60-65 degrees. When you sink your feet into the sand the warmth burns your feet. Mum put her foot next to the rock where the heated gas came out of the sand and the water was boiling and she burnt her foot. Then we left the Hot Water Beach to go to Cathedral Cove but to get there you had to go on a 35 minute walk. It has a massive hole through the rock that looked like a cathedral. There was a waterfall there and I got drenched and had to walk half way back with no shoes on the rocky path.

Today we left our lovely hotel in Auckland to go on a 2:30hr drive to get to the Waitomo Caves where Sam and I went on an activity called black water rafting. We had to go to the top of a mountain where we practiced jumping off a waterfall but we practiced on a wharf but it was still fun. Then we walked down the hill and then had to go into a little hole that was only a metre high and 70cm wide. We waited until our eyes adjusted and then we could see the large cave with a river running through it. The cave was 65 metres underground! The guide told us not to touch the stalactites and stalagmites in the cave because they are so fragile and sensitive. We could see lots of glowworms on the roof of the cave – they looked like tiny lights. Then we moved on and walked though the cave and the water was up to our ankles. We came to our first waterfall and I had to go first jumping off the waterfall into the river below. It was fun. Then it became deep for most of the way and Sam nearly fell into this deep hole on the second waterfall. We spent over an hour floating down the underground river and through the rapids on a tube. When we were leaving the guide said “Let’s play a game. Turn – off your head lights”, because we had them on our helmet. Then he said “the game is called find your way out in the dark”. It was so dark, lucky he was joking. I was the first out of the cave. We got to have hot soup and toasted bagels as we were all freezing cold!

Last night we got to Auckland Airport at 1:00am and found our motel. Unfortunately it had a bed that was so hard you could feel the springs. Today we left the motel at 8:00am and the first thing we did was go to the shops to get breaky, get the internet working and a sim card for the phone. Then we left to go to Mt Eden where the volcano left a massive crater after it became dormant. The crater is 15-20m deep and 100m wide. Then we left Mt Eden to go to an activity called Tree Adventures NZ. There were 9 courses to do but Sam and I only did 5-9 but because they were so straining on your wrist I stopped at 7 but Sam finished all the 5 courses. They were even harder because it was pouring down with rain so the wires were all slippery so it was easy to fall off, but I was skilled enough not to fall. After the activity we went to our new hotel at Sky city which is really nice. It has a heated pool on the roof and Foxtel.
I am looking forward to seeing the glowworms tomorrow.
