I can hardly wait to present mine and Codie’s imovie because a lot of time and effort has been put into it. While I was finding facts and pictures I never really thought about how horrifying deforestation and global warming really is!
Today we (Michaela, Emily and Helen) presented our movie. Everyone seemed to like it. I sure did. I put a lot of effort into it so I hope it goes to good use. We wanted to persuade every world leader as well as everyone in first world countries to do something about the injustice in Pakistan or even just, remember the Pakistani people and not to complain when you have to make your bed because many in those war torn areas of Pakistan don’t even have a bed. We also wanted people to know what their life style is like. When I was making it, it persuaded me so it must have worked.
Your group presented a very moving plea for greater awareness of the plight of Pakistani people living in fear of their lives and also in such poverty. You certainly persuaded me to act but you didn’t give the audience a guide as to what to do next. What would be a good plan of action?
What do you mean by, I “didn’t give the audience a guide”?

In H.S.I.E Elena, Claire and I are working together. We are doing our one on rice. It is really fun and we are working well. For the rest of the time we have we are going to work on our board game. That is all we have left and we want to go well. Our game is going to be like snakes and ladders but called something else and it might be played a bit differently. This term in H.S.I.E has been a lot of fun working with Claire and Elena. I have learnt a huge amount of things about rice. When we were picking our topic we didn’t think rice would be a good topic to do but we stuck to it and found it very interesting. I am so glad we stuck to rice as our topic. It has been so fun. It is a shame Ms David did’t get to see S3V’s work after she was with us for a long time.
In HSIE Codie and I are working together on the speech and iMovie. Our topic is deforestation and the song we are having on it is ‘Earth Song’ by Michael Jackson. It’s really fun working on it, finding pictures and especially finding more facts and becoming more aware about what’s really going on.
In S3D this week one of the things everyone has done (and I’m sure have enjoyed) is our HSIE Assignment. We have finished the information sheet and are now on the Board Game. But today the class was given a booklet from World Vision that showed us all the things that go on in the world. The class did this activity in groups of three. I was with Shanny and Jason and we came up with three questions very interesting questions that were answered and we got into a lot of detail. I think my group went really well with that because Mrs Dunn even gave us six challenging riddles to solve and the answers were in the booklet given to us. HSIE is one of the subjects I LOVE getting into detail with!
In HSIE, my group (Ryan, Jack.L, Tom, Matt and I) have to make a boardgame about out topic. Our group has chose Child Trafficking as our World Vision topic. It is pretty interesting and I think that our board game is going to look the best
Well guess what? In HISE our group have been working mostly on the chart table and we have completed the 3 minute video. I think we have worked very well : )
We have also finished the map and all we have to do is the board game.
In HSIE, our class has been completing our board games and preparing for our YouTube videos. The board game was fairly difficult for me, as I am not very creative, although we are maintaining reasonably, I think.
In HSIE Jaime, Rebecca and I have been working on a movie, which is about the Water, Sanitation and hygiene problems in South Africa. We’ve used Windows Moviemaker to construct the movie. We have also used Google Images to find fantastic photographs of this suffering country. We’re going to record our voices saying the information while the photos are appearing. This assignment is so much fun and makes us think of what we can do to help this poor country.
Every time I find a recycled bottle/box I bring it in to school for everyone to share but I know that I have brought a bit too much cardboard. Yesterday I found shredded paper in the shredder and put it in a plastic bag and got it ready to take to school. Hopefully I will remember to take it with me.
I LOVE OUR S&T UNIT it is so much fun. We made a light bulb work by using batteries and connecting it to the two connectors on the side of the light bulb. IT WAS SO MUCH FUN!
(try it one day)
I have found the electrity unit very interesting to teach and I have been very pleased with the knowledge that is starting in our particular power area. I am looking forward to hearing the experts from s3s discussing what they have discovered and their thoughts on each power area. We have been mapping where our particular power source is situated. Interesting that the green power seems to be situated in Europe and Canada. I was very pleased to see the students excited and engaged in our learning.
‘The Inconvenient Truth’ is the documentary that Stage 3 is focusing on this term. Watching this documentary is very interesting… and scary at the same time because in a couple of decades if global warming keeps up, who knows what will happen to us?! And I’m sure it is easy to just say “Oh, I am going to have a shorter shower today.” But how did you get to school? Did you watch the T.V.? Did you turn on the lights? It is not very hard to do all of those things, however, if you are passionate about the environment you don’t realise, because that is all we know. Come on! It is the 21st Century guys!
We are learning about Globalisation and I think it is quite interesting, learning about the world, because we have no idea how much we are affecting our world with our selfish decisions. During this length of time I think I have learnt something; don’t have a long shower! That is just one of the tips about trying to save our world. Al Gore has taught me a lot. I wonder when we will get our assignment…
I’m not sure which page to put this on but I decided this one for reasons you will see! This afternoon my sister and I were playing scrabble(we are rather competitive) and I glanced out the window and saw a dust storm. As I was very focused on the game I didn’t notice , soon later we heard a massive cracking sound! We looked out of the window for the cause and couldn`t see anything but dust and carlights. The both of us quickly closed all the windows when suddenly we heard a crack of thunder before it started to rain and the dust cleared. One of the trees at the front of our yard near the road was snapped and being supported by a smaller un-broken branch and was close to the power lines the S.E.S came to check and now the power dudes are coming to deal with it . Now if you don’t get why I posted it here it’s because it’s to do with science (electricity/lightning/powerlines) and because weather depends on air pressure to control it (maybe that should be rephrased) and what is in the air? Carbon dioxide, which has to do with globalisation (An Inconveniant Truth)
Thank you so much Ryan, for your blog. I am so impressed with the way you are connecting what is happening in our world with what we are learning about in the classroom. I wonder if anyone else had similar ideas about this afternoon’s violent storm and climate change. Particularly since we had such an involved discussion this afternoon about the levels of carbon dioxide in the air.
When we watch the movie “An Inconvenient Truth” its pretty scary when I actually think about my future!!! If global warming keeps going the way it has been who knows what’s going to happen to us!?I wish I could just STOP the deforestation, help the polar bears and other animals that are dying because there is hardly any ice left and make the people believe that global warming is true so we can fix it before it gets worse! (there are lots more things I would do if I had the chance)!
That’s a very interesting comment Melanie. It fits perfectly with your HSIE assignment about uploading a video of yourself onto You Tube for the leaders of the world to listen to what you have to say.
We are learning about globalisation. I think it is interesting finding out how we are globally interconnected! We are also seeing how we are global citizens. I’m pretty sure that a global citizen is someone who has or is helping the world or even its local area.
On Wednesday, S3S started a discussion on the recent events in Australia with the oil rig burning. I was impressed when we put on our scientist hats and the theory making being discussed was about why oil sits on top of water. Tom and Lochlan helped the class including me in understanding the difference between 2 stroke and 4 stroke oil. I think that a global citizen is someone that uses something that is made over seas, like the school laptops, they are made over seas, I think. But I would like to know are house materials made over seas? Do we get the timber from over seas? Is the wood from a rainforest? Because if it is those poor animals. We have destroyed their homes. I wouldn’t like it if my home was chopped to bits…….

I’m excited to do S&T but not really HSIE. I’m not that interested, like I was with the “frog” thing. Can’t we do something more interesting. I hope our S&T unit is exciting. please Mrs K. :(:(
Michaela
I wonder how we could make this an exciting unit for you – once you have chosen the direction you want to go with your global connections (you could link it to the global response to global warming – this would then link it back to the plight of the frogs ie their declining numbers.
Mrs K, I guess you are right. Maybe when we get more into our HISE unit it might be a touch more exiting. Anyway I’m a bit excited because my group have done heaps on that sheet with the background and facts stuff.

Luke, great to read that you are anxious to start on S&T. We should be able to start end of week 3, now that we have you working on your assignment for HSIE.
Yes Mrs Stenning, but it would use less because then you could switch off the stove and use the remaining heat to heat up some food or some thing else.
I think so much electricity would be used! If Australia uses a lot of electricity imagine how much other countries would use every day, or even how much the world would use?
Jack, power is made in many ways, such as wind and water turbines and if you think about it, if the world had no power for a day people all over the world would be helpless; no light, no computer, no TV, no air conditioners, no fridges. So we are probably as used to power as breathing in these modern times. Also on that “Shift Happens” video it shows how quickly things took for 50 000 buyers or users to get them. I was surprised when i saw the ♪ipod™♪only took three years to get so many buyers.
I think that globalisation is an interesting topic. I liked the video we watched in class on youtube that was called “shift happens”. The video had lots of fascinating facts such as there are 200 million users on Myspace That got me involved. I can’t wait to learn more about globalisation!
Electricity isn’t really important. Just think about it years ago people used to live without power at all. The problem is that people these days rely on power too much. So we should really toughen up.
What ways do you suggest we toughen up? There are many things we are used to having now, that were not invented when there was no electricity. Can you think of some electrical appliances that you could definitely live without?
Natasha, I love the way you have been reading all the blogs and trying to answer people’s questions.
Tyler, I think that’s a great question about where electricity goes after the toaster. Really clever thinking. I wonder how we will find out. If we searched on the internet what would we look up?
Term 4.
This term stage3 is learning about electricity in science and globalisation for hsie. How is electricity made? Who discovered electricity? When was electricity first discovered? Has it changed from what it used to be to what it is now?
Nick, if you think about everything people do in their daily lives and then think if it uses electricity then of course it would be necessary. What do we use at school that uses electricity? Phone, laptops, air con, lights, IWB, and probably heaps more that we don’t even know about. Then when you get home you would use: lights, fan, cd player, fridge, freezer, stove, computer and whatever else you use at your house. Now think if electricity is necessary? Even though we probably could use less of it or nothing at all!
I can hardly wait to present mine and Codie’s imovie because a lot of time and effort has been put into it. While I was finding facts and pictures I never really thought about how horrifying deforestation and global warming really is!

I was surprised when i saw the ♪ipod™♪only took three years to get so many buyers.

I agree with you Jordan. The youtube video our class watched did have many different facts. I think that globalisation

If they were helpless for a day they could survive without light, computer, T.V., air conditioners. We only use it because it is there.

I think that globalisation is an interesting topic. I liked the video we watched in class on youtube that was called “shift happens”. The video had lots of fascinating facts such as there are 200 million users on Myspace That got me involved. I can’t wait to learn more about globalisation!

Jordan, you’re right. It did have interesting facts. I think that’s what made our class start to realise its a problem.

Electricity isn’t really important. Just think about it years ago people used to live without power at all. The problem is that people these days rely on power too much. So we should really toughen up.
By: Nicholas Su on October 26, 2009

What ways do you suggest we toughen up? There are many things we are used to having now, that were not invented when there was no electricity. Can you think of some electrical appliances that you could definitely live without?
By: st3s on October 27, 2009

For one we could live without kettles (teapots), we can just use the stove, right?
By: Emily T on October 28, 2009

Emily, doesn’t the stove also use electricity? Even if it’s a gas stove it uses an electrical starter to light the flame.

YES! Good point. People didn’t have it a long time ago, but now with all this mordern electricity our lives can be a bit easier.

Natasha, I love the way you have been reading all the blogs and trying to answer people’s questions.
Tyler, I think that’s a great question about where electricity goes after the toaster. Really clever thinking. I wonder how we will find out. If we searched on the internet what would we look up?

What is the difference between lightning and electricity?
What is electricity used for?
Why do we need it?
What makes power?

Read the reply I gave to Nick Suth and it might answer why we do need it.

This term stage 3 is learning about Electricity for S&T. Also we are learning about Globalization in HSIE.
How is electricity created?
Why is globalization so important?

Term 4.
This term stage3 is learning about electricity in science and globalisation for hsie. How is electricity made? Who discovered electricity? When was electricity first discovered? Has it changed from what it used to be to what it is now?

Aaron they are really good questions. Maybe we could make a chart of some of the questions we have and try to answer them before the end of the year.

Is electricity really necessary in the world?
By: Nicholas Su. on October 20, 2009
at 1:16 am
Nick, if you think about everything people do in their daily lives and then think if it uses electricity then of course it would be necessary. What do we use at school that uses electricity? Phone, laptops, air con, lights, IWB, and probably heaps more that we don’t even know about. Then when you get home you would use: lights, fan, cd player, fridge, freezer, stove, computer and whatever else you use at your house. Now think if electricity is necessary? Even though we probably could use less of it or nothing at all!
