  1. This week I’ve been reading the first “Twilight” Book and it’s a great book so far.

How many people have read this book?
    Did you enjoy it?
    Has anyone seen the Movie?

    • Rosie. I know Twilight is about a vampire and things like that and it also includes a girl who falls in love, but is it really good and can you understand it?

  2. At the moment I am enjoying reciprocal reading because my group is participating and sharing ideas.

  3. I am enjoying the book we are reading it’s called The Last Circus. It’s about a group of old people in a circus and when their circus closes all the animals go and also all the performers. But there is one clown, Oscar who is left there and he walks around trying to find his best friend”Rosie” who is an elephant. Until one day he sits under a tree and feels something on his back. When he turns around it is Rosie’s trunk. I think people will enjoy this book if they like picture books with words that explain a lot to the reader. The author of this book and also the illustrator are convincing me with the story and the pictures. Everyone should read this book.

  4. Today in Reciprocal Teaching, we pulled apart our book to the extreme. It was fairly easy however, we still managed to identify questions and to clarify some words.

  5. I recently borrowed a book from the library called “Holes” it’s meant to be a very good book and you might have seen the movie. I haven’t read it yet but I’m looking forward to reading it!

    • Just warning you, it is an excellent book to read with very interesting detail. I think it was last year, but we also got to see the movie to it. The movie is even better than the book.

    • I think you will enjoy it because last year Stage Three read it and also watched the movie. It’s a very good book and show.

  6. I am enjoying reciprocal reading and I also like the idea of working with other classes so it’s a mix up group because you get to experience other people’s learning.

  7. I hope when our group does reciprocal teaching next time we can read the Frankenstein story. It sounds good because the last text I read was a bit boring for me and I think for my group as well. Also I think the green group is working very well in reciprocal teaching. At first I didn’t enjoy it but now I am.

    • Natasha, what has become more enjoyable about reciprocal teaching? I’m sure others would share their thoughts too if you do.

      • I think it’s now that I have a better idea of what I’m doing that makes it more enjoyable. Also how my group works well and we get stuff done so we have enough time to do a role play at the end. It is good how we can read different texts and find out different things. When we have to clarify words we also all discuss what we think the word means and that helps us too.

  8. Em T could you get me the sequel? I love the book!
You wouldn’t have been even close to guessing that shape!!! It’s usually me and Elena in our group because Bodie and Justin are on the floor… FUN!!!

  9. Today in reciprocal reading we read a text about global citizens. It gave us some information on how to become a global citizen and what they do.
I think reciprocal reading is a great way to understand things you may not understand in the text that you’ve read, and by working as a group you can come up with new ways to grip what you’ve read.
I particularly enjoy summarising, but most of the time I write too much.

    • It’s great to hear from you, Helen! I like the way you have made a comment about reciprocal teaching and how it helps to understand the text better when you talk about it in your group.

  10. I think that the reading group I’m in has improved a lot since it was split, because it had too many people. Now everybody is waiting their turn and nobody is talking over each other. I think these changes have made it more enjoyable!

    • I love listening to your groups responses Mel, much better than last week. A lot of thought is going into your questioning.

  11. This new layout is great on these pages because it is more moved to one side and therefore easier to read on my DS:) In my group we were all so focused today I was just like woah! When our group is as focused as it was today it makes me think that maybe it is all Mackenzie who causes all the hubbub and laughing!

    • I’m sure it’s not Mackenzie, Ryan. I’m sure she would have something to say about your idea!

  12. I think in Reading groups it was a great decision to make an information text about a football game.

    • Luke
Why do you think the author used the metaphor of the football game. Who do you think will win the game, Humanity or Injustice?

  13. I think reading groups are really good because I am learning harder words and we are participating really well. Also the book that we are reading is so interesting :)

  14. Our group worked excellently today! We read a story about how a space shuttle in 1986 exploded and it was a major controversy. We were all giving each other a go to talk and we were all being fair.

    • Isn’t it satisfying Jason when everyone in the group is focussed and works hard. You learn so much and it feels very successful.

  15. I have been reading a book called “Whispers.” I find it very interesting. I think that there are a lot of people in stage 3 who would like to read it.

    • What’s the book about Chloe? Who do you think would enjoy it most?

      • The book we are reading in Reading Groups is called “Time Sailors.” We haven’t read a lot about it but this is what I know:

It’s about a boy named Edward who visits his grandfather Wilson. Grandad Wilson takes Edward back in time.

      • Does it sound like a book you are going to enjoy, Chloe?

      • I’m positive it will because Claudia, Chloe.W and I are really enjoying it :D

  16. In reading groups my group have been reading a book called ” The Time Sailers.” It is an interesting book and we have been working really well. I think that if we keep reading well like we are now we will finish the book really soon and the good thing is that there are no people in our group who don’t try hard.

    • I agree Chloe. We are doing really well!

  17. My book is so interesting! You need to read it.

    • What’s your book called Michaela? I’m sure there are others in Stage 3 who would also enjoy it.

      • Mrs Stenning, my book is called “The Twits” and it’s about a married couple that are hairy and ugly and they are twits.
        It’s by Roald Dahl

      • I’m sure I’ve read that book Michaela, many years ago. I’m sure I enjoyed it because I love the crazy humour of Roald Dahl!

  18. HI guys it’s Elena.I am reading a book called “Worry Warts” by Morris Gleitzman. It’s about a kid and his parents who worry about everthing,a bit like my parents.I am not quite through it yet but I am at least half way.

    Enjoy your weekend.

  19. I think in Reading Groups my group worked really well. We stayed on task the whole time, we helped support each other and worked as a team, we even were able to help each other with ways to help others in their learning.

    • Yeah, we did work really well hey Luke! :D :P

  20. Recently, in Reciprocal Reading groups, we have been looking at a magazine called “Get Connected”. It is a great book with lots of graphs and brain storms. When you read it you do really think about the people who are not as fortunate as us……Did you know that many children in poor countries die before the age of 5?!!!:(

  21. When we do Reciprocal Teaching I don’t understand why we can’t just read the normal books that we read in reading groups? Also, I think this “teaching” is not that interesting. At least when we do our normal reading groups in class it is exciting and more interesting for me! :)

  22. I have enjoyed reading your blog. Congrat’s Stage 3 S & Mrs. Stenning. I told you guys that Mrs. Stenning was a top teacher!

    • How about Mrs K and Mrs Dunn? Don’t forget about them.

  23. In reading groups we read ” Get Connected ” by World Vision and it was really sad because if we cut down the earth’s population to just 100, 52 percent struggle to live on $2 a day. So don’t be selfish!
I’m reading “Tales of a Boy” by Roald Dahl and it’s about his life story. Right now Roald just put goats droppings in his older sister’s boyfriend’s pipe and if you want to know what happens next …..BLOG ME!!!!!

    • Hey Bec, I have read that too! I can get the sequel to it for you if you would like. You should really try “Tomorrow, when the war began”.Great book. Blog me if you need that Roald Dahl sequel! 8-)

  24. Yesterday in reading groups we had to show the class how to do questions. It was fun because I was in a group with Lachlan.T. We were reading “Global Connection.” The class and Mrs K gave us an A.

    • I was in the group too, Liam.
      Thank you very munch

  25. In reading groups at the moment we are running a few courses of ‘Reciprocal Teaching’ on our own. I have said that our group is never fully focused but now we have risen from a low level to a high level. But we may still have to sort some stuff out, like listening to each other, and working constructively. Well done Red group!!! ;)

  26. Guess what book I’m reading?….. I’m reading “The Twits” by Roald Dahl. It’s an excellent book. It’s too excellent to share with you. You have to read it to find out. HAHA!

  27. Today in Reading Groups my class had to be split into new groups and I was in Mitchell and Bodie’s group. I enjoyed explaining the text in my own words.

  28. In my Reading Group (yellow) I have been reading Touchdown. It is a different book to Rosie’s but similar. It is ok but some of the poems and information I find boring. I enjoy make believe. BRING ON THE NARRATIVES!!!

    • My group is reading a school magazine although not really sure which one. It is ok but enjoyable. I do agree with you Em that some passages seem quite boring but I’m trying to forget about that and focus.

  29. Greetings =P
Oops I already forgot what I was going to say !
Now I remember …Today my group had our second session of the R.E. Our symbols are nearly all done except one or two. I cant wait till our next session with Mrs. Stenning when we will be able to exchange questions and pick a new book. Also Green Box cards is one of the activities in menu board and I am almost finished my level. I only have one card left ! Tash and I are competing to see who can finish the box first. It started off a bit unfair because I was a level above her but because I am always “Too busy talking” She got a few cards ahead and raced onto my level. Now I am putting my competitive act back together and such on. Goodbye fellow classmates and teachers.

  30. Mrs Stenning,
I have to ask you something that is really serious! Ok, here goes. I was thinking maybe you should let me teach the class for the day. You can relax, drinking coffee whilst watching me take over the classroom..muahaha. That would be awesome. I know you’re probably thinking out of this whole text “Why did she put this in Reading”, well I did that because that it is more relevant in ‘Reading’ than ‘Maths’.
    Bye
P.S Natasha can be my co-teacher, she can teach English and Spelling, and I will teach the rest and Tyler can be the punisher!

  31. Reading groups…have improved a lot over the past couple of weeks. Our group is working on the Religion. I’d like to congratualte Tom for co-operating in the last session of Religion. Oh and Ged I hope your hand gets better…(pathetic) ;) But I’m really proud of my group…we are heading to a level of high order thinking!

  32. Today in reading groups I did Religion, I had to do day one of Creation. It wasn’t that hard because I just had to colour a foam ball black and yellow and stick string to it. I had fun but I still like Green box better.

  33. I am having fun in reading groups. Like RE, Green Box, Reading with the teacher and BTN.

  34. Today in reading groups we read the story “Hunter and Moon mysteries.” The story has some very interesting words and it is a good story.

  35. In reading groups, my group is reading “Duster.” It is a book about a lost dog which stays with other kids for three months. Then his real owner comes to a school play and finds a dog that looks exactly the same as his other dog. It jumps up on his lap and he realises Duster was his dog, but his real name was Scoot. They find out on the second last page. I think it is very interesting.

  36. Today I finished my book ‘James and the Giant Peach.’ I have written five questions for the people in my group to answer. This book is really interesting because James lived a very isolated and melancholy life with his two mean aunts, Aunt Sponge and Aunt Spiker. Until he dropped a bag that an old man gave to him and the bag formed a giant peach and inside the giant peach lived very large insects the Centipede,Lady Bird,Old-Green Grasshopper,Miss Spider,Earth Worm,Silk Worm and the Glow Worm. They go on a very long journey and land in New York after then James was known as the happiest boy in New York and was no longer known as a lonesome boy who lived with his two awful Aunts.

  37. Ryan I was very interested when you told me you blogged with your DS. Does everyone know how to do that? Could you explain it to us tomorrow?

  38. In Reading groups this term I’ve been reading “Touch Down” the School Magazine. It includes Poems, Fact and Fiction. So Far I have read 2 of the magazines and they are quite good.
Has anyone else read one ?
What does everyone think of this new reading group style with Mr. Dowd?

    • I think the new reading style that Mr Dowd is teaching us is a bit annoying. It is good and all, but I would like our groups re-arranged. In my group, I personally think its a bit mixed up which is good and bad in some ways. I like it because there is a mix of both boys and girls. I don’t really like it because some boys like to muck around and are not letting other people speak. They would ask questions that have already been clarified and don’t listen to the leader. How is this new style to work if the boys aren’t contributing at all?

      • That’s a great comment Jordan. I think we should talk about this seriously when we get together on Monday. I’m sure there are others who may be feeling the same. It may also make the “non-contributors” think about their actions and the way they are affecting the learning of others.

      • Today my group, which originally had 9 people in it, got split into a group with five and and a group with four people. This made reciprocal reading much better as the groups were smaller. I personally think this is easier which means not as many people talking at once and we can get everyone’s point of view. My group was very successful but we need room to improve as well.

  39. At the moment I am reading the Tomorrow series, and I recommend it to all. I am up to the second book, and so far it is about, well I shouldn’t spoil it, so I will say it is set up in the future. It is very addicting, so be prepared for a long read!
    =) :)

  40. Salutations! I think the new way of “reprocial teaching” is great( but I probably didn’t spell it right!) I rather like the prediction bit, and how we learn the meaning of words from the words surrounding it in the text. I also like it how our group can answer each other’s questions by the information we have read about, but I prefer to do reading groups as a class, not a stage.

  41. My goal for reading groups is to try and use smart phrases such as:
    Perhaps maybe…
    My similarity with …
    My clarification…
I think that the author meant…
    Turn to page …
    What impresses me is…
    My prediction…

  42. How far have you read Aaron? What is your favourite part so far. What attracted you to read it?

  43. In our group we are never fully focused and I would like to change it! But I am enjoying our book and reading with Mrs Stenning! I can’t wait until Reciprocal Teaching. It is so much fun. :)

  44. Our group is the Red group. We are, at the moment reading “James and the Giant Peach”. We have almost read the whole book. I like reading with the teacher the most and doing a comprehension or spelling. In reading groups I haven’t been fully focused, but we have about 8 weeks until the end of the year so I am going to try my hardest.

    • Mackenzie I am most impressed with your focus goal for the next 8 weeks. Let me know if you need some strategies to keep you on track.

      • Mrs Stenning,
I will, maybe we might need to get a load of work to do so we won’t have any time to muck around.
        Byee :)

  45. Hi! My name is Aaron and in my reading group we are reading a really good book called “Hunter and Moon Mysteries: The Weird Eyes File.” I have read 5 chapters and am so interested to find out more. The weird thing is at the beginning I didn’t really like it, but when I got into it I discovered that I liked it. It is about a girl who is moving into an old house and she finds a doll with violet eyes and she calls her Violet. But when her friend was making fun of the doll it stabbed him with a pin. My favourite part would be when the girl looks at the doll while it’s leaning on the mirror, then she turns around to talk to her friend and when she turns back around the doll has moved from the mirror onto the floor. Then she puts the doll back and when she turns back around the doll has moved again. That’s my favorite part. I like this book also because after the beginning I didnt want to put it down. I would recommend this book for stage 3 and up. So far I give this book an 8 and a half out of 10.

    • I’m so glad you are enjoying this book Aaron. You might let people know on the blog what lexile the book is so they will know if it is at their reading level.

      • I think the lexile for this book is 550. It’s below our level but I think most of us are enjoying it!

      • I’m glad you are all enjoying your book, Natasha. Next time we will have to select a book with a higher lexile. Tomorrow’s Reciprocal teaching should be exciting. I can’t wait!

      • What is going to make it exciting? I guess I’ll just have to wait and see!

      • Yes you will Tash, and if I know you enough I would say that you will find it quite enjoyable. The learning will be exciting and also if we are lucky we may be able to teach :) Yesterday’s lesson may have been boring but it sure had a lot of information, and I learnt heaps. It should be exciting :) Cya

    • What do you think is going to happen when we read with the group?

  46. In reading groups the green group is reading “Hunter and Moon Mysteries: The Weird Eyes File.” I am enjoying this book because it is about mystery and I enjoy that kind of thing. Beth finds a mysterious doll and her friend Hal thinks it is kind of stupid, but he is a boy. Anyway Beth and Hal find many things up in the attic and there is a lot that they are going to discover!

  47. I’ve been reading a book called “Time Zone.” It is very interesting but very short however it has a lot of detail. I recommend it nine out of ten

    • I recommend the book that the red group is reading “James and the Giant Peach”

It is about a boy whw has to live with his Aunt Spiker and Aunt Sponge. They are mean and rude to him and make him clean and make dinner. One night he had to clean the backyard and he noticed a hole in the peach so he climbed through and found a door in the seed where Miss Spider, Old Green Grasshopper, ladybird, centipede, earthworm, silkworm and glowworm were living. They have been waiting for him to arrive so they can roll off the hill that Aunt Spiker and Aunt Sponge live on.

  48. The book I’ve been reading is “Duster” which is a very interesting and exciting book because its not one of those books you just read and its boring. Its one of those that is so interesting you don’t want to take your eyes off it.

  49. In reading groups I have been Reading “Hunter And The Moon. The Eyes File.” It is about ghosts. Its pretty interesting. For our next session in reading groups we have to finish the book and write some Stage 3 questions to ask our group.
